Happy belated holidays from Vellum! May your days be filled with joy and your prompts run smoothly ❄️.
We have some new presents for you and hope they streamline your experience in Vellum.
Let's unwrap these exciting new features!

Key New Features

Optional Input Variables for Prompts & Workflows

You can now specify whether an input variable is required vs. optional, and set default values for optional variables in both Prompts & Workflows. With this, you can add new input variables without first needing to ensure that your application code is providing values for them. Listen to our favourite CTO demo it here:

Error Handling in Guardrail Nodes

The "Reject on Error" toggle enables you to catch and handle errors directly within Guardrail Nodes to ensure a smooth process execution. Previously there was no way to proceed if your Guardrail failed but with the new toggle, you can continue on without aborting the Workflow and handle the error yourself.

Direct Mapping of End-User Feedback

In Evaluations, you can now map end-user feedback directly to ground truth variables, enhancing eval datasets with real-world insights, helping refine models closer to user expectations.

JSON File Support in Document Indexes

Document Indexes now support uploading and indexing of .json files, expanding the range of data you can work with and enabling more search capabilities.

Enhanced Search Result Traceability

Search results can now link to documents! You can now navigate to referenced documents from search results, making it easy to see where the source of a given search result. You can also now see the Document’s metadata in the search results:

Other Updates

Workflows

In addition to the new error handling and optional input variables features, we've also optimized the Workflow Editor UI, providing a more responsive experience overall when working with large workflows.

Coming Soon

Workflows SDK — an open-source framework that redefines AI workflows with dynamic graph-based design, seamless code-GUI collaboration, and powerful debugging tools. Stay tuned for the launch!

And that’s a wrap on 2024 - we hope these enhancements make your work more enjoyable and productive. From all of us at Vellum - thank you for a phenomenal year and we’re so excited to build upon our journey into 2025 with you all!
